+ What can I do to keep my teeth healthy?
Seeing your dentist twice a year is standard but varies based on your personal oral health. In between cleanings it’s important to keep up on daily hygiene routines - Brushing after meals with electric toothbrush, flossing properly (yes, there's a correct way to floss) and adjunct devices such as water picks, prescription toothpaste and gum stimulator.
+ Let’s be real...Is flossing really that important? Do I need to floss everyday?
Flossing is as important as showering! Ideally you should floss after every meal, we understand everyone's schedule doesn't permit that frequency so at least floss before going to bed. The most important takeaway is making sure you floss properly, ask me for a tutorial next time you are in my chair.
+Is mouthwash or rinse just to fight bad breath or does it have other benefits?
Mouthwash comes in different forms, basic mouthwash isn't as helpful as brushing and flossing. It’s typically used to fight bad breath but if you don't have proper oral hygiene benefits will wear off quickly and you won't get rid of bad breath. A Prescription rinse such chlorhexidine has benefits that fight infections or help heal after oral surgery.
+ What are some early signs that might have something going on with my dental hygiene?
Bad breath (Halitosis) that you can’t get rid of from brushing or rinsing is a sign that your body isn't properly disposing of bacteria that cause various oral conditions such as gum disease. Tenderness, bleeding and swelling around the gums is another sign of acute oral conditions or infections.
+Are dental x-rays safe and needed? I am nervous about the effects of radiation!
We use digital x-rays, these x-rays are completely safe and actually have similar radiation levels around us or a 1 hour plane ride. People with certain conditions such as pregnancy may be more sensitive, we recommend speaking with our office if your conditions are different from the average patient.
+I am self conscious about my teeth color, what’s the best way to whiten my teeth?
There are numerous ways to whiten your teeth, the common component in all methods is hydrogen peroxide. The only difference between over the counter products and an in-office procedure is the concentration and delivery method. In-office whiting is recommended as it’s the safest and has the best outcomes. As other cosmetic procedures, I advise to do it in moderation as side effect may include increased sensitivity, stripping of the ensemble and burning of the gums. The best way to avoid staining is to avoid smoking, food and beverages that have been known to affect coloring such as coffee, tea, red wine and dark foods. I recommend using a straw when consuming those beverages and brushing right after.
+ I love sweets, should I avoid eating sweets to ensure my teeth are healthy?
I love sweets too! I would suggest staying away from sticky candies such as gummies. Sugar is the underlying factor when it comes to sweets, be sure to brush after consuming.
